Transition Year

Transition Year is a compulsory and dynamic one-year programme at Nagle Community College. It provides a vital bridge for students, enabling them to transition smoothly from Junior to Senior Cycle. The programme encourages personal and social development, recognizing the need for students to grow in independence and become active agents in their own education. Research consistently shows that students who participate in TY achieve higher CAO points on average compared to those who do not.

The Transition Year programme aligns with the new Transition Year Programme Statement, which emphasizes flexibility, collaboration, student-centred learning, and innovation as core elements. These principles underpin all aspects of the programme, ensuring that students engage in meaningful learning experiences that foster curiosity, resilience, and lifelong skills.

At Nagle Community College, Transition Year is designed to foster academic achievement while also preparing students for the Leaving Certificate Programme, further study, and adult and working life. The programme emphasizes the development of critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills, equipping students for a rapidly changing world. Students who engage most enthusiastically reap the greatest benefits, both academically and personally.

The Transition Year programme includes:

Study of core subject skills to provide a strong foundation for Leaving Certificate work, supporting the development of key skills in literacy, numeracy, and subject-specific knowledge.

Exposure to optional subjects through a taster programme to assist students in making informed subject choices for 5th year.

Engagement with diverse Transition Year modules, ranging from Sustainability Leadership to STEM initiatives and creative arts; among many others; ensuring a well-rounded educational experience.

Life Skills development, including personal development, social education, ICT, and access to a variety of perspectives and experiences through guest speakers, workshops, and cultural events.

Opportunities for personal initiative, such as entrepreneurship projects, charitable fundraising, and participation in youth leadership programmes like the Cooperation Ireland Future Leaders Programme, among many others.

Active community engagement through structured work experience placement weeks, allowing students to gain insight into potential career paths while contributing to the local community. We have many local industries and companies that support us in this, such as Viatris, PM Group, Mater Private hospital, Quest, Blackrock castle observatory etc.

Physical and recreational activities, including adventure experiences, sports sampling, sports leadership programmes and team-building exercises that promote health and well-being.

Participation in national and international initiatives, such as the BT Young Scientist Competition, Model United Nations, and an optional international trip to broaden students’ horizons.

Support for whole-school DEIS targets, fostering inclusivity, equality, and opportunities for all students to thrive.

The Transition Year experience at Nagle Community College is further enriched by creative and cultural programmes such as the BLAST arts programme and STEM-focused projects among others, empowering students to discover their talents, embrace challenges, and prepare for a successful future.

By embedding the core elements of the Transition Year Programme Statement, the programme ensures that students engage in experiences that are innovative, collaborative, and student-centred, positioning them to excel in both their educational and personal journeys.
